WanderWay vs Apple Maps

The Perfect Companion for Apple Maps
Spoken Directional Cues
Apple Maps tells you when to make a turn, but ignores the world passing by your window. WanderWay calculates your orientation and announces discoveries as you drive past them, giving history and context hands-free.
Curated Sightseeing Filters
Instead of generic coffee shops and gas stations, WanderWay gives you 16 specialized filters for road trippers: covered bridges, ancient earthworks, waterfalls, state parks, and historic markers.
Smart Detour Estimates
Spot an intriguing historic overlook on your drive? WanderWay calculates exactly how many minutes (+3m, +9m) the detour adds to your final arrival time so you can decide with confidence.
Before You Switch
Doesn't WanderWay already use Apple Maps?
Yes. WanderWay uses Apple's own MapKit routing engine for turn-by-turn maneuvers, road geometry, and live traffic — the same engine behind Apple Maps. What WanderWay adds on top is a sightseeing layer: 16 curated categories including covered bridges and historic markers (the full regional list is in our covered bridges guide), directional narration tied to which side of the car a sight is on, and automatic Sunday Drive loop building.
Can Apple Maps narrate historic sites as I drive past?
No. Apple Maps only speaks navigation instructions — turns, merges, lane guidance. WanderWay adds a second, independent audio layer: it tells you when something worth seeing is coming up on your left or right, with a line or two of history, so you can look without taking your eyes off the road.
Can Apple Maps generate a round-trip scenic loop?
Apple Maps only routes from point A to point B — a loop means planning every stop yourself. WanderWay's Sunday Drive feature builds a closed loop automatically: tell it how many hours you have, and it plans a route that favors backroads over highways and avoids backtracking, then brings you home.
What does WanderWay cost compared to Apple Maps?
Apple Maps costs nothing extra — it comes preinstalled on every iPhone, and Apple doesn't run ads inside it or charge a subscription for it. WanderWay is also free to download, with every feature (Sunday Drive, narration, offline downloads, CarPlay) unlocked during a 14-day trial. After the trial, unlocking the app permanently is a single $4.99 payment — no subscription, nothing that renews on its own. If you bought WanderWay back when it was a one-time paid app, you already have full access and won't be asked to pay again.
Where does WanderWay's map and routing data come from?
WanderWay doesn't build its own road network. For the actual drivable route — turns, road geometry, live traffic — it hands that off to Apple's MapKit, the same system behind Apple Maps, so routing accuracy and coverage match Apple Maps in your area. What is WanderWay's own is the sightseeing layer on top: a hand-curated database of covered bridges, historic markers, overlooks, and similar places across 16 categories. That database is strongest across the United States, and coverage in any one county will vary. If you know a spot it's missing, tell us through the contact page and we'll look at adding it.
When should you just stick with Apple Maps?
If you only care about getting from A to B as fast as possible — daily commuting, airport runs, navigating an unfamiliar city — Apple Maps alone is simpler: one app, no extra download, already open on your phone. WanderWay is worth adding alongside it when the drive itself is the point: weekend trips, visiting family a few counties over, or an afternoon when you have a couple of free hours and want to see something along the way instead of just arriving.
